The Inner Eye
Art Beyond the Visible
Vintage (paperback) UK
The inner world of dreams, visions and fantasies has inspired artists to represent the unseen. The Inner Eye includes works from the present day: Old Master drawings of religious ecstasy and miracles, visionary images by Breugel, Fuseli and Blake, 'spirit photographs' and conjuring devices.
Images range from the mystical to the literal, from the excited heavenly tumult seen by Renaissance saint in trance to the sample of ectoplasm 'captured' from a medium at a seance in the 1920s. It encompasses the invigorating variety of means that people have devised over time, in all their fantastic ingenuity, to penetrate the great mysteries.
Marina Warner's introductory essay and fully-illustrated Short Dictionary of the Inner World explore the ways in which secret visions are made visible.
